We finally had some language to start communicating about what was going on.Īnd since last year, even after finding a therapist, these self-help podcast shows have literally been the crutch that helped us save our marriage and helped Simon start finding who he is. We finally had something to stand on to begin healing. That single episode (linked below) exactly described how Simon had grown up and identified it as Trauma. ![]() And one day, we came across a self-help podcast that changed everything for us. ![]() We were desperate for something that could help us turn things around so we could stay together. What type of therapist could help? (We weren’t aware of religious trauma syndrome and childhood emotional neglect yet.) We had no idea what kind of therapist to look for. How do you even begin to find a therapist when you know something is wrong but have no idea what it is? We both knew he needed to start going to therapy if we wanted to stay together, but we were stuck. So by December 2020, just about every other week, I considered whether we should separate while he figures himself out, so he doesn’t keep hurting me with passive-aggressive lashing out whenever his trauma was triggered. It can even look like shutting down and being emotionally unavailable) (To clarify, we don’t mean domestic violence – lashing out, and emotional overreactions take on far more forms than physical violence only. I kept trying to connect with him to understand what he was feeling and let him know what I was feeling about our reality.īut he learned to stuff his emotions so far down that he wasn’t even aware he was feeling anything. And for Simon, these messages sunk in way deeper than they did for me. We were told, “lose yourself in service,” and that feeling down was a punishment from Satan that meant you needed to be more faithful. And for months, neither of us realized we weren’t on the same page until December 2020, when things got BAD between us.Ī big part of the trauma of being in a cult is that cults don’t teach us how to feel our feelings and set healthy boundaries. I had no idea that he was still struggling to accept the reality we faced. For months, I was processing my grief and trauma, thinking Simon was doing the same. My life had been turned upside-down, and there was nothing more important to me than dealing with it.īut we all process things differently. Once we realized we had been part of a cult, I set my mind on nothing else but accepting this reality and processing the grief and trauma. And it turned our lives completely upside-down. This realization was the absolute biggest shock of our lives. We both stopped going to church a few years ago. It sounds dramatic, but honestly, all four of these podcast shows have been the crutch that has saved our marriage this past year.
